Has Your Roof Sprung a Leak?

Water drop captured falling into a bucket

Is this a familiar fixture in your office?

There's nothing worse than that sinking feeling you get when you realize your roof has sprung a leak. You may be tempted to procrastinate, telling yourself that it's a slow leak and a well-placed bucket will take care of the problem.

However, addressing a leaky roof immediately, whether residential or commercial, is the best way to protect family or employee safety. It's also more economical in the long run. The quicker you resolve the problem, the less likely you are to confront these problems:

Mold, Mildew and Health Hazards
Once moisture enters inaccessible areas, mold and mildew are nearly inevitable. Not only are they health hazards which can cause severe allergic and respiratory distress, they can spread through vents and HVAC and become established in carpets, ductwork and more. Once mold and mildew are established, they're very expensive to eradicate.

Fire Hazards
Water causing a fire hazard? It's counter-intuitive, but when water contacts electrical services, sparks may fly. Turn off electricity to the area and have an electrician inspect the wiring.

Slipping Hazards
Especially in a fast-paced warehouse or a retail establishment, a wet, slippery floor can be dangerous. A bad fall could cause injuries and, potentially, legal actions as well.

Permanent Structural Damage
Water can damage rafters, ceiling joists, framing, sheetrock, exterior trim and more. The longer that building materials are exposed to moisture, the greater the likelihood of permanent and expensive damage.

Compromised Insulation
Wet insulation is ineffective, and wet insulation in a closed space is unlikely to dry thoroughly, inviting mold and mildew.
