From 1904 to the Future

How F-Wave Roofing Revitalized This Historic Minneapolis Home
F-Wave Roofing

Project Overview

This stunning 2,828 square foot home in the heart of Minneapolis has been a symbol of craftsmanship since it was built in 1904. At the time, most homes in the area were less than half its size and the population of Minneapolis was barely over 200,000.

Inspired by elements from a lavish 1870s Chicago mansion, this home has been an icon in the Whittier neighborhood for more than 100 years. But when recent storms hit the area, homeowners Kurt and Erin were faced with the challenge of preserving the historic charm of their home while repairing significant damage to the roof.

The Dilemma of Replacing Natural Slate

Part of what made this home so beautiful was its slate roof. While durable, even slate has its breaking point, and it doesn’t last forever. Another major drawback is how heavy it is. The added weight requires roofing structures to be reinforced, which only adds to the cost of replacing a slate roof.

Staying true to the original architectural vision motivated Kurt and Erin to look for roofing material that would look like slate while offering similar durability and longevity. This led them to F-Wave roofing with All Elements.

What is F-Wave Roofing?

Like slate, F-Wave roofing is incredibly durable, lasting for decades longer than traditional asphalt shingles. But equally important to these Minneapolis homeowners, it looks nearly identical to slate and would allow them to maintain the historic charm of their home.

Aside from being the obvious choice in terms of aesthetics, F-Wave tiles come with numerous other benefits:

  • Class 4 hail rating, the highest impact rating available.
  • Class A fire resistance, also the highest rating available.
  • Wind tested up to 130 MPH, on par with a Category 4 hurricane.
  • Made with UV-resistant materials that maintain stable colors.
  • Lifespan of 50+ years.
  • Lighter weight and easier to install than slate.
  • Minimal maintenance and natural prevention against mold and algae.
  • Available in numerous colors to fit any aesthetic
  • Made in America.

Testimonial

“Our project was a large one since it included a roof, siding, and pretty much all the windows. Shane was great helping us navigate through it. He gave us clear expectations on outcomes and timelines, helped a lot with the insurance filing, was always very responsive to any inquiries, and helped update us on the progress. We are very happy with the outcome and most definitely will be recommending All Elements to our friends and neighbors.”

F-Wave Roofing Cost Considerations

When it comes to roofing materials, asphalt shingles are typically the most affordable option. But it’s important to consider the overall lifespan of different types of shingles when budgeting for a roof. Given that F-Wave tiles last two to three times longer than asphalt, this becomes a more cost-effective option in the long run.

While slate has a longer average lifespan, it’s one of the most expensive roofing options available. Not only is the material itself costly, but homeowners have to pay extra for roof supports, and the heavy weight of the material makes installation more difficult.

F-Wave, on the other hand, is lightweight and easy to install, leading to lower labor costs. The material itself is also more cost-effective than slate.

Installing an F-Wave Roof on a Historic Home

This beautiful home needed more than a quick fix. To preserve the historical elements of the home, synthetic slate F-Wave tiles were the obvious choice.

The All Elements team started by meeting with homeowners Kurt and Erin and assessing the storm damage to their roof. They worked with the homeowners to determine the best color, texture, and tile shape for their new roof.

Next, the damaged slate was removed, and the team inspected the underlayment to ensure it was in good condition. All Elements applied waterproofing at critical areas to ensure no leaks could occur in the future. And finally, the team applied the new F-Wave roofing system. After installation, the tiles are sealed to ensure everything would remain protected against future storms.

One of the challenges of working in a historic Minneapolis neighborhood is space. However, the All Elements team was able to maneuver safely between nearby homes without disrupting the neighbors.
